Criminal Law

Criminal law is the branch of law that deals with offences against society, prescribing punishments for acts prohibited by legislation. Its primary objective is to maintain law and order, protect individuals and property, and ensure justice through fair trial procedures.

Criminal offences range from minor violations to serious crimes and are generally categorized as cognizable or non-cognizable, bailable or non-bailable, and compoundable or non-compoundable. Common areas under criminal law include theft, assault, cheating, fraud, domestic violence, dowry harassment, cybercrime, narcotics offences, and serious charges like attempt to murder, murder, and culpable homicide.

Criminal proceedings are governed mainly by the Indian Penal Code (IPC), the Code of Criminal Procedure (CrPC), and the Indian Evidence Act, along with various special laws such as the NDPS Act, POCSO Act, and Information Technology Act. These cases involve multiple stages including investigation, bail, trial, and appeal.
